AT THE MOVIE, Week 4, The Laughter of God

I. Does God Really Laugh?

“The one who rules in heaven laughs” Psalm 2:4

The Good News:

1. God invites us to enter into His Happiness.

  • God says: “I will find joy in doing good for them.” Jeremiah 32:41
  • Jesus said: “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” John 15:11
  • Paul writes: ”Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.”

2. Blessed means Happy. Paul is saying: “the glorious gospel of our happy God.” 1 Timothy 1:11        ? Our Happy God likes to laugh.

“We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy.” Psalm 126:2

II. The Joy of the Lord

“The joy of the Lord is your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10

1.     Enjoy a Good Laugh, Like  God

“Enter into the joy of your master.” Matthew 25:21

“He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.” Job 8:21

  • God loves a good laugh. And the devil gets way too much credit when it comes to humor. But humor comes from God, not Satan.
  • Humor is not a result of the fall. Only perverted humor is. Humor springs from God who is supreme in all things good.

God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.” Luke 6:21

  • God is the one and only true God, and He is a Happy God.  He is the source of all that is healthy and wholesome.
  • Anyone who would come up with the ideas to create aardvark, llamas, parrots, and the Indian Bullfrog has a huge sense of humor.

2.     God is Preeminent in All Things

“He is first in everything.” Colossians 1:18

  • Nobody laughs like God does. He laughs for joy and he laughs in derision at fools who think they can overthrow him…

“But Lord, you laugh at them.” Psalm 59:8

  • The only reason we have the capacity to laugh ourselves to tears is that we’re like him.
  • God is holy. But if we think holiness and humor are incompatible, it’s only because we’ve been sold a diabolical lie.

3.     The Pervert of Laughter

“Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?” Acts 13:10

  • Satan is a rip-off artist. He takes God’s creation and perverts it. He’s no humorist. What he is good at is deception and has been very effective at tricking millions to follow his “good times.”

?  Satan uses humor to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10)

  • The devil doesn’t enjoy fun. As C.S. Lewis wrote, “Fun is closely related to Joy”. The devil seeks to twist fun into something that is perverse so he can pull us toward destruction, instead of Joy!
  • To him, humor is only a means he can corrupt, manipulate, control, and condemn people, but it will end!!

“The wicked plot against the godly; they snarl at them in defiance.  But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their day of judgment coming.” Psalm 37:12–13

4.     God Loves a Good Laugh

“A cheerful heart is good medicine.” Proverbs 17:22

  • We would all be healthier and happier and, very likely, holier if we had more good laughs. For laughter is more characteristic of God than weeping.

“The eternal happiness of the triune God spilled over in the work of creation and redemption. And since this original happiness was God’s delight in His own glory, therefore the happiness that He has in all His works of creation and redemption is nothing other than a delight in His own glory.” – John Piper

? God is not the sad God, but the blessed and happy God!

  • God’s happiness is eternal and rooted in his unchangeable and unshakable nature. He’s the source of happiness! I believe that in heaven we are going to be surprised at how much God makes us laugh!

We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy.” Psalm 126:2

5.     Because of Jesus, We can Laugh

“God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.”   Luke 6:21

  • One of the great tragedies of the fall is that we lost so much of our capacity to laugh with God. This sin-sick, evil-infected world became a place of sadly fallen natures.
  • However,  Jesus came and changed all that. The eternal God became the “man of sorrows” (Isaiah 53:3) for us so that we might find joy and “have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).

“He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.” Job 8:21

6.     God Can Turn Sorrow to Laughter

“God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.” Genesis 21:6

  • Why is Sarah laughing, because God has blessed them with a baby when Abraham was 100 years old!! And that is funny!  Abraham had blown the marriage and baby thing time and time again, but God still brought them a child.
  • Crying is going to go the way of death and someday will be no more, look at Revelation 21:4, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
  • Joy will be overflowing, turn to Psalm 16:11, “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.”

7.     Good laughter is a taste of Heaven.

A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.” Ecclesiastes 3:4

  • Weeping will end, but not laughter. We will laugh for joy many more times than we wept for sorrow.

“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Psalm 30:5

? God loves a good laugh and we are like God when you laugh.

  • God is our intimate God who loves and enjoys a good laugh with us.  And as we said before, when we laugh we are like our God:

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” Revelation 21:4
