CALLED TO SERVE GOD

Week 1, Understanding Our Gifts

I. Intro.… Regarding Your Questions

12:1 Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.

  1. The Corinthian Questions: Paul wrote a First letter to the Corinthians that we do not have, they wrote back to him with many Questions and 1 Corinthians is that letter.

  2. The Importance of Spiritual Gifts…Don’t misunderstand them!

Four Words for Understanding Our Gifts: The 4 Words come from one verse,  verse 7:

“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.”

II. Intro on the Four Words

  1. First, the word “Spiritual.” “A Spiritual gift is given to each . . . “— It’s a gift of the Sprit and doesn’t come from People!
  2. Second, the word “Gift.” …Gift is given to each“—its a gift from the Spirit.  We show Jesus to the world when we use our Gifts.
  3. Third, is the word “Each.” “…To Each of us. . . “— that’s me, you, all of us who are Christians.
  4. Fourth, the word “Help.” “…so we can Help each other.” That’s a result of each of us having a Spiritual Gift.  We use them to help each other.

Okay, let me add a couple thoughts about being Called to serve, before we talk about these 4 Words…

III. Important: All Christians are Called to Serve…Some biblical ideals for Serving

  1. Glory to God and Love for People.  That’s why we serve, bringing Glory to God’s Name and Loving People that God has put in our Church and Lives.
  2.  Doing More than Just Good.  The church is the place where these two things come together. The world often tries to do good for each other. But they normally leave God out.
  3. However, Christians who know they are Called to Serve seek to Live out their Faith and Use their Spiritual Gifts in the Church and in the World.  When we do these things we see the Lord’s work in our lives and church.
  • So this verse (v. 7), I talked about above, is right at the heart of what it means to be Spirit-Led Christians. So let’s take these four words, one at a time, and see what the context tells us about them, and about what we should be at Impact.

1. “Spiritual”

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

  1. A “Spiritual” Gift, is a gift from the Holy Spirit.  I know that sounds simple, but many still miss this point.  The Holy Spirit is the one comes and lives inside of us and gives us Gifts to Serve.

13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

   2. In the same way, The Spirit gives a great variety of Gifts to God’s people.

To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The Same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing…

» Remember…its not a Birthday gift or a Christmas gift or a Valentines gift.  It is a gift from the Holy Spirit.

This verse emphasizes two things.

  1. One Spirit Behind All the Varieties of Gifts.”It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts…” (v11a)
  • Look at these verses…

“…but the same Spirit is the Source of them all.” (v4)

“There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.” (v5)

“God works in different ways, but it is the same God…” (v6)

“To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing.” (vv8-9)

  1. The Spirit Decides which Gifts to Give to Each of Us!  verse 11 also emphasizes that the Spirit is the one who decides who will have what gift…  ”He alone decides which gift each person should have.” (v11b)
  • The Spirit is Sovereign. That’s the point of verse 11: He does what he wills. He is God. He is the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son, and their one divine will comes to expression perfectly in his. They are one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And they build and rule and guide the church.

2. “Gift”

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

  1. Gifts  are to Help us and make us Effective in our Ministries.
  2. Remember the Spiritual gifts are gifts…we don’t earn them and we aren’t given them to us because we are so talented.
  3. The Spirit gives us gifts to bring His light to the church. Spiritual gifts are given to show the world the Holy Spirit and put Him on display.  So when we use our Gifts we are honoring the Holy Spirit.
  4. The Work of the Church Is Thoroughly Supernatural.  Let me stress something else about the Spirit here. What this verse is saying is that the work of the church is a thoroughly supernatural work. People will say, “From each one is offered human effort and gifts.” But that is not true or Biblical… “a spiritual gift is given to each of us…” The Spirit gives us the Gifts and they are used for His Glory.

? Whatever you do, do it in the power of the Spirit that the Spirit might be seen among us more and more.

3. “Each”

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

Who Are the “Each of Us”?

  1. Who are the “each of us” Look at verse 27… ”All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”
  • The “Each of Us” are those who Follow Christ and seek to Serve Him by Using their Spiritual Gifts
  • The “Each of us” are people who seek to live under the Lordship of Jesus—who Think, Act and Live out His Ways.

18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

  1. But all that has changed because of the work of the Spirit. The “each of us” in verse 7 are people who have ceased treating Jesus as a curse to be rejected and now follow him as Lord.
  2.  All from the Spirit
  • The Spirit’s main Purpose is to Glorify Jesus & make Him Real in people’s lives. Jesus, “He will bring me Glory” John 16:14
  • That’s who the “each of us” are in verse 7—people who want to be like Jesus and Allow His Spirit to Work in Us.

4. “Help”

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

  1. Finally, Spiritual gifts are given to “help each other.” The Spirit does not give gifts and ministries so that we can Boast Spiritually! He gives gifts and ministries for two reasons: to equip the church and to help us do good to each other.
  2. Gifts are for the Glory of God and the Good of the Church. This is right at the heart of our understanding of Bible: the Pursuit of God’s glory and the Pursuit of what is Good!
  3. How do we ‘Help Each Other’: Use your Gifts!!

27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 28 Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles,  those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.

  1. Let’s Find our Gifts (if you haven’t already) and Use them to Serve.
  2. We can help the Church & Each Other when we Live out our Gifts!  The Holy Spirit gave us gifts that are to be used inside and outside the church.  And as a very good friend of mine said,

“If you want to live a Great life,  find your Spiritual Gifts and wrap your life around them.”
