When you ask the 90 Percenters, “how do people get into heaven?” they reply:
_Good_ PEOPLE GO!
- Five Problems with the Good People Go Theory:
- PROBLEM #1: __How Good__ is Good?
- Problem #2: What is Good _Enough__?
- Problem #3: Let Your _Conscience__ Be Your Guide.
- Problem #4: Isn’t it Just About Keeping the Big __10_____?
- Problem #5: What About the _____________ Bloomers?
- A Midnight Interview
Jesus was once asked by a rich young leader, “Good teacher, what must I do to get eternal life?” He replied, “Why do you call me good? Only God is good.” – Mark 10:17, 18
Another interview with Jesus: There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” – John 3:1-3 (NLB)
NOTICE THAT THERE IS NO MENTION OF _Being__ ____Good____. “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” – John 3:4-8 (NLB)
“How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked. John 3:9n (NLB)
ISN’T JESUS BEING NARROW-MINDED? ISN’T THERE MORE THAN ONE WAY TO HEAVEN?
WHY WOULD WE BE SURPRISE THAT THE GOD WHO MADE __People_____ ONE WAY TO BE BORN __of Water__ WOULD ALSO MAKE ____People_____ ONE WAY TO BE BORN ___Again_____?
Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man has come down from heaven. And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. – John 3:10-15 (NLB)
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT MEANS WHEN PEOPLE SAY, “JESUS DIED FOR MY SINS?”
So God sent poisonous snakes among the people; they bit them and many in Israel died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke out against God and you. Pray to God; ask him to take these snakes from us.” Moses prayed for the people. God said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it on a flagpole: Whoever is bitten and looks at it will live.” So Moses made a snake of fiery copper and put it on top of a flagpole. Anyone bitten by a snake who then looked at the copper snake lived. – Numbers 21:7-9 (The Message)
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. – John 3:16-18 (NLB)
AND NOW FOR THE CONNECTION:
For God took the sinless Christ and poured into him our sins. Then, in exchange, he poured God’s goodness into us! – 2 Corinthians 5:21 (TLB)
“God made him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” -2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)
