Impact Christian Church
Have you ever had a rock collection? As a little boy I had a pretty good collection! Our house was the first one builit on in new development in Pleasant Hill. So we were on a street all by ourselves which led to many good rock findings…however, we didn’t use our rocks for display…we used them for war. 2 or 3 of the neighborhood boys would get behind a small hill and 2 or 3 others at the other end of the lot and we would throw rocks at each other. Makes sense doesn’t it. I always had to have Bryce Cook on my team, he had a rocket arm, and Chris Bura had to be on the other team…no arm…of course Chris is a millionaire now because of computer skills and development…okay so maybe rock throwing is not important to a career.
The wild thing is we never really hurt each other, that wasn’t the point…throwing was the point. Then we would gather at my house and we would hang, eat and my dad would tell us about the real Rock. Over those first 3 to 5 years all my friends became Christians…Bryce, Troy, Chris, Steve Amos, Jeff, Norm, Chris, My Dad was introducing them to the real rock, Jesus Christ! You know its wild, but it stuck with most of them…I still talk to them and they still love the Rock.
While my friends connected to the rock, Israel completely missed Him!
I. Missing The Rock (vv1-11)
- Israel didn’t Get It!!
They were set up and God’s chosen people. They had the ruler of the Universe on their side and they still didn’t see the picture. ..Still…
- Israel Ignored the Point
4 For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ.
So who Calls God or Jesus the Rock…
“No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2
“He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!” Deuteronomy 32:4
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my Rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” Psalm 18:2
He is our Rock!!!
a. Israel Lived for Themselves, Rather than God!
b. God did great things for Israel…Cloud to Follow (v1), Baptized by Moses (v2) and Spiritual Food & Water (v3,4)
“They forgot what he had done—the great wonders he had shown them, the miracles he did for their ancestors…” Psalm 78:11-12
2. Israel Craved the Wrong Things
6 These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did…
a.They failed to ‘Crave’ God: rather…Evil things, Idols, Pagan rituals, Sexual stuff, Testing Christ, Grumbling… (vv6-11,14)
11 These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.
Paul says okay…Don’t worship or crave evil things…rather Christ is your Rock. He is the place where we stand!
II. 6 Ways to Live Life on the Rock!! (vv12-33)
Living Out Our Faith…Together Is the theme we choose for this series and it sure fits. Paul is deeply commit to the Corinthians Living out their faith as a Group!!
The Rock is Our Salvation is who we Celebrate.
“I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. But anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Romans 9:33
- Okay so Israel blew it. They lived for themselves rather than God. They thought that they were the Rock!!
- Israel couldn’t follow God because of their ‘Cravings’, But that doesn’t mean We Can’t.
(the Apostle Paul is frustrated with the Jews, so he lays out ways we can live on the Rock, and not fall into the bad Cravings. These are awesome principles from Paul…we ought to hide them in our hearts and live with them daily…)
- Live with the Right Cravings
As we read above the verse 6 These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did…
So How to we ‘Crave’ the Good Things?
a. Crave Spiritually: Read the Bible, Pray, Study, Worship, Join a Small Group, Ask one of the Leaders to Disciple you!!
b. Crave Godly Friends: Hang out with People who help you grow Spiritually. “Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” 2 Timothy 2:22b
c. Crave Holiness: Run From Enemies, Sexual Sin, Evil, Lusts…
“Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does…” 1 Corinthians 6:18 (& 1 Tim 6:11)
“Rescue me from my enemies, Lord; I run to you to hide me.” Psalm 143:9
“Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace.” 2 Timothy 2:22a
Action Plan: Pick 1 of the ‘Right Cravings’ above, write it down: and put into practice this week. Take time to tell a friend what you are working on. Remember the Right Cravings were 1. Crave Spiritually, 2. Crave Godly Friends, 3. Crave Holiness…what could you work on this week?
2. Live Carefully
12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
a. We get tempted Quite Often…But God will not allow the temptation to be more that you can Handle!! Stay Holy, God will give you a ‘Way Out’!!
b. Don’t Participate in things that are Unholy!! (vv15-22)
21 You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too. 22 What? Do we dare to rouse the Lord’s jealousy? Do you think we are stronger than he is?
(Remember…Let’s not Provoke God to Jealousy, as the text says. Stay loyal to Him and flee the evil one!! Be careful to not fall into the devils trap. “Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap.” 2 Timothy 2:26)
3. Live with Concern for Others
(What’s good for Others? How can I help them in need?)
23 You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. 24 Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.
a. Paul’s writes that it is okay for you to eat almost everything, but if it hurts or offends someone, don’t eat it!! (vv25-30)
b. Strive to meet other’s needs, not your Own!!
You know in our concern for others, we worry less about ourselves
Action Plan: Think of 2 people you know who have needs. Try to help them meet those needs between now and Christmas.
4. Live for God’s Glory
31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
a. All for His Glory…eating, drinking or whatever!
b. Does what I ‘do’ bring Glory to God?
5. Live with Kindness
32 Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God
- Most people focus on themselves and their needs. Rather, let’s think of others and bless them with your Kindness.
6. Live to Bless Others
33 I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.
- Let your life be a Blessing to all people, do what is best for them!
Action Plan: Who do you need to bless today? Who needs a word of encouragement? Who needs someone to listen to them? How can you be a blessing to someone today? Who needs to know Jesus?
Psalm 40:2 is a good summary of this message:
“He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.” Psalm 40:2
In other words: He brought me up out of the horrible pit I dug, and out of the muddy dirt where I had placed my feet, and placed them upon my ROCK, Jesus Christ and gave me a Firm place to stand!!!
Let’s all stand on the Rock of Jesus Christ togethe
