ROOTED IN AND BUILT ON, Week 2, Colossians 1

7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Colossians 2:7

  • Paul is assuring us that when we are Rooted in Christ and our lives are Built on Him, our faith will be strong and we will be thankful people.

Week 2, Believe, Stand, & Proclaim

Well, the apostle Paul wants to help us understand who Jesus is. And I want you to look at your Bible to Colossians chapter 1.  Among all of the passages of scripture that we might have looked at to see the reality of Jesus who was God, none is more grand than this one in the first chapter of Colossians.  Let’s start at verse 15.  Listen to what the Bible says about Jesus Christ:

Jesus in Relation to God

  • Jesus is God in Flesh

“Christ is the Visible image of the Invisible God.” (v15)

…therefore Jesus is God.  God on earth in human form.                      Human like us and God in our form.

? Jesus is the Eikon of God: Image , Likeness…

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,     and the Word was God.” John 1:1

  1. Jesus existed with God before Creation

“He Existed before anything was Created” (v15,17)

…so then we was not created.  Jesus has always been…

? The first born over all Creation

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Gen 1:1

Fact #1 Books write themselves without the need of an author.

Fact #2 Cars build themselves without the need of a manufacturer.

Fact #3 Music composes itself into beautiful harmonies without the need of a composer.

Now, any kindergarten student could testify to the fact that the above three statements have as much truth to them as the flat-earth theory.

However, there are countless university lecturers and professors that are paid big dollars to promote…

Fact #4, “The whole universe came into being through a process of random chance and beneficial mutations, without any need of a Designer.” Evidently, fact #4 is on the same level as all the previously mentioned “facts.” The true fact of the matter is that evolution is just a big fairy tale for grownups!

Jesus in Relation to the Universe:

Paul Gives 3 Reasons for Jesus’ Over Creation

1. He is the Creator

  • He Existed before Creation and He is Exalted in Rank Above it!!

“(He) is Supreme over all Creation” (v15)

…he is first in rank, position and place…supreme over every that was made and created…Jesus is Supreme!

2. Jesus Made all things, both in the heavens and on the earth.

“For through Him God created everything in the Heavenly Realms and on Earth.” (v16)

  • He is Before All Things

“He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world” (v16)

? When the Universe began, He already Existed .

“Everything was created through him and for him.” (v16)

3. In Him All Things Hold Together

“And He holds all Creation together.” (v17)

  • Not only did Jesus Create the Universe, He also Sustains it.
  • He is the Power behind every Consistency in the Universe.
  • He keeps the Entities in Space together.

There are many scholars and scientists who don’t believe in Creation or God, Here is the story of one of them…

An atheist was walking through the woods, admiring all the “accidents” that evolution had created. “What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!”  As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. Turning to look, he saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charging towards him. He tried to run, but fell down..the bear was right over him, reaching for him with its left paw…

The atheist cried, “Oh God help!” Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving. As a bright light shone upon the man,“You deny Me, teach others that I don’t exist, and yet you want me to help”

The atheist said, “I am a hypocrite asking for your help, but perhaps you could make the bear a Christian?”

“Very well,” said the voice.   The light went out. The river ran. The sounds of the forest resumed. Then the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed its head, and spoke: “Lord, for this food which I am about to receive, I am truly thankful.”

Jesus in Relation to the Church

Paul presents 4 great Truths about Christ and the Church

1. Christ is the Head of the Church

“Christ is also the Head of the Church, which is His body.” (v18)

He is the One in charge.  He is the one in control.

  1. Christ is the Source of the Church

“He is the beginning, Supreme over all who rise from the dead, So He is first in everything.” (v18)

? Christ is the Source of the Church, He is first in everything,

? He established and built His Church.

2. Christ is the Life of the Church

“For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ” (v19)

? Our God gave Himself “in all fullness” to live in Christ and bring life to the Church…to bring life to us!!!

3. Christ is the Peace-Maker for the Church

“Through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.” (v20)

  • Christ made us Holy (v22)
  • Christ made us Blameless (v22)
  • Christ made us Beyond Reproach…”Without a Single Fault” (v22)

…all done so we can be Reconciled with God.  Be made one with God through Christ.

Look at verse 21…”This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions”….now you are reconciled with God!!!

The Church in Relation to Jesus

Three Ways to Not Drift From Your Faith

“But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.” (v23)

  1. Believe

…Believe this truth, Believe the Word of God, Believe in Christ.

2. Stand

…Don’t drift away, Stand in the Promises of God, Anchor yourself in the Word.

3. Proclaim

…share the Good News, tell others of Christ, Travel the world with the Message of Jesus.

Paul’s Proclaiming,  28 So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. 29 That’s why I work and struggle so hard, depending on Christ’s mighty power that works within me.

Let’s Pray…

Please stand for the Benediction

“He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see.  To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.”    1 Timothy 6:15-16
