THANKS LIVING, Colossians 2, Pastor Steve

THANKS LIVING                          IMPACT CHRISTIAN CHURCH   Pastor Steve  11/19/17

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:7

You may have heard the saying,

“God’s gift to you is your life, but what you do with it is your gift to God.”

You can have an Attitude of Gratitude by thinking of Thanksgiving, not just as a holiday, but as a lifestyle.  By doing this Thanks Living it will make you happier, give you more satisfaction and give your life more meaning and significance

God said, “The Sacrifice that honors me is a thankful heart.” Psalm 50:23a

Science has discovered that Gratitude is the healthiest emotion.  It can make your whole life healthier!

You can make your entire life a Thanksgiving to God because of who he is, what he has done for you and what he has promised for your future.  Today’s message, Thanks Living, shows the ways we can be Thankful to God for all of His Promises in all of our Living!

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:7

  1. WHY & HOW

A. WHY DO WE GIVE THANKS?  Because of Who God is…

  1. Because of How Great  God Is!!

Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. Psalm 145:3

(If God is big enough to create the Whole Universe, he is definitely interested in you.)

“May all who are godly rejoice in the Lord and praise his holy name!” Psalm 97:12

 2. Because of How Good   God Is!!

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!” Psalm 118:1

(God is not good some of the time…he is always loving, always good, always merciful, always for us…His people!)

“I will thank the Lord because he is just…” Psalm 7:17

(God is fair, He always does what is right!)

“I will thank the Lord, because he is good.” Psalm 54:6

(Everything in your life that is good came from God.  If God was not a good God there would be no good in the universe.  It would be a universe devoid of everything that is good.  We can thank God for that!!)

  3. Because of How Kind    God Is!!

“The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness.” Psalm 145:17

“His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” Rom 2:4

   1. By Singing  from the Heart

“Sing out your thanks to the Lord…” Psalm 147:7

(It doesn’t have to perfect.  Just sing from your heart.  Sing with love to your Savior…I get really self-conscience…but I sing anyway…maybe you need to sing to…just think if you all sang, you wouldn’t here my voice when I sing!!)

  2. By Thanking God in Prayer

“Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness.” Ps 105:1a

(Just say thank you, talk to God, have conversation with Him.  God doesn’t need a bunch of formal prayers and holier than though prayers…he just wants to talk with you!! So talk to Him.)

“Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!” Psalm 145:3

(He is worthy of praise, even if it doesn’t sound that good!!)

Action Plan:  Take a few minutes each day to praise and Thank God for who He is, for His greatness, His love, His goodness…

                         — Because of What God Has Done

“I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done…” Ps 52:9a

1st He Created Me!

“Let every created thing give praise to the Lord” Psalm 148:5

2nd He Saved Me!

“I praise you because you saved me…” Psalm 9:14

3rd He Answers my Prayers!

“I thank you for answering my prayer . . .” Psalm 118:21

4th He Gives Me Direction for Life!

“I will bless the Lord who guides me…” Psalm 16:7a

(He guides you through the Bible, He guides you through Spiritual Teaching, He guides through circumstances, He guides through Friends…lots of ways He guides us)

5th He Came and Died for Us

“…God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:13-14

(Could you imagine if someone said to you I will pay of your house, your credit card, and all your debt…Wouldn’t that be incredible!!!  Well that is what Jesus did for us ‘He canceled the record of charges against us.”  He Made us alive!!  Alive with no sin to pay for and now record to make sense of…)

(It is sad to me that so many people are ungrateful for all that God has done for them.  It breaks my heart some times when I see the world in complaint instead of Gratitude…Well you know we can do something about it…we can help others with their relationship with Jesus…)

 1. By Telling Others about Jesus

“Thank the Lord! Praise his name! Tell the nations what he has done.  Let them know how mighty he is!” Isaiah 12:4

(We can do this by telling somebody else about Him…tell everyone what He has done!!  We know how they can have life and have it to the fullest…but we don’t tell them??  Doesn’t make sense…let’s tell others about Christ.  Just share your story with those you connect with.  )

 2. By Giving an Offering  Back to God

“Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High.”  Psalm 50:14

(Thanks and Giving go together.  So let’s be Living models of giving)

“…Bring Him a voluntary offering in proportion to the blessings you have received from him.” Deuteronomy 16:10

(how has God blessed you this year, then give in proportion to how God has given to you!! How do we show our Gratitude to God?   By giving back to Him…)

“Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.” 2 Corinthians 9:11

Action Plan: Commit to inviting at least 1 person to Christmas Services.  Write down their name and pray for them.  People are open this time of year…who are you inviting?

             – Because of What God has Promised

“I will praise you…because you are faithful to your promises”  Psalm 71:22

(thank you God for your promises to me)

“Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.’” John 11:25

(are you thankful for Life after death…are you thankful to God for this…)

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33

(that’s a promise… Live for God, Strive for Righteousness and He will give you everything you need!!…Let’s do that!!  God I want your plan in the World and in my life…)

“I will never leave you, and I will never abandon you!”  Hebrews 13:5

(Some of you have been abandon in life, family, friends, spouse, which is awful…God says I will never abandon you!! Thank Him for that)

 1. By Serving  Him with the Abilities He Gave Me

“Let us be thankful and please God by worshiping Him…” Heb 12:28

(We worship God by serving others…even a cup of water to one who is thirsty.   Do you think God put you on this earth to serve ourselves or others?)

(We have the opportunity to serve Others with all the talents and life that He has given us…can you sing then serve God with your voice, can you do construction than use your gift to bless God’s people, can you write then write things to others that point them to God, can you cook, than cook food that is a blessing to others and to your God.  What can you do…How can you serve others?)

(Serve God with all the Abilities that He Gave You…you will live a very fruitful life.  That would be Thanks Living!)

  2. By Living   Each Day as a Thank You Gift to God

“Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” Colossians 3:17

(One of my favorite verses.  How am I representing Jesus with what I do and say?  What a great question?  Maybe we need to put this verse on our calendar, on the 1st of every month…and ask ourselves, Is that I am Doing and Saying representing Jesus in my life and showing my thanks to God?)

Action Plan: Show your family and friends how much you love them by serving one of them each day this week. Choose someone each day and then find a way to serve them selfless

              – Because of What God Has Planned

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

(God’s Will…be thankful in all circumstances!!  I can do this because I know who God is and I what He has in store for me…)

“Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all he has done.”  Colossians 2:7(LB)

(God may my life overflow with thanksgiving.  We will be so much more satisfied with Life.)

And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living beings. And they fell before the throne with their faces to the ground and worshiped God. They sang, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Revelation 7:11-12
